105 :: ‘Solar Punk, a framework for hopeful futures’

When I was at Unsound Festival last week I bumped in to Journalist Jacobo García from Spain based Clot Mag. He told me over the deafening noise of Dreamcrusher that an article based on an interview I did with him at Sonar+D Festival was now online.

According to Jay Springett, one of the most regarded SolarPunk theorists, there is a set of cardinal differences between SolarPunk and traditional Sci-Fi. Solar Punk is born on the internet and it’s developed there, without a central authority or a literary canon defining the background and rules of the universe. Only a small corpus of books have been printed, mostly collections of short stories. Being originated on the internet, the visual component is as important as the writing itself. Browsing through SolarPunk dedicated websites, Tumblrs and forums one can observe a mixture of real-life images taken out its usual context. Stills from movies and video-games, every imaginable type of fan-art -even sketches and designs – all put together framing a concept-art narrative.

Right now, SolarPunk kind of lives in financial limbo, still underground. But given its horizontal and open ethos (where everybody can contribute by starting its own website), there is a real concern of losing the central values of the genre. It’s not difficult to imagine a literary company appropriating it for-profit or a video-game being released using the catchy name, eliminating on its way the defining values of SolarPunk.

‘Solar Punk, a framework for hopeful futures’ by Jacobo García

What I hope comes across in the article is how I think of Solarpunk as a Memetic engine. It’s a world first, a set of books, and narratives second.

Here’s a slide I’ve previously posted from my talk at Unsound:

093 :: Profiles and Radio

I’ve been in the media the last week:

Can Science fiction save the planet?

I was profiled/interviewed by French online magazine ulyces.co

The piece is in French but as you can see in the screenshot above, Google Translate does a very good job with it.

The interview covers Solarpunk, My Sonar+D talk, Stacktivism work and more. Really happy with it.

Siglo21 – Interview (Radio 3)

I was also on Spanish Radio this week! It’s one of the interviews I did at Sonar+D. I’m dubbed into Spanish and sound very handsome.

I speak about Solarpunk, Infrastructure and Deeptime.

You can listen to it here ~40mins in: http://www.rtve.es/alacarta/audios/siglo-21/siglo-21-angel-olsen-01-08-19/5359463/

090 :: Back From Sonar(+D) – Mega Post

Wow, What a week. Still decompressing from the trip. Writing this post has helped me process it quite a bit.

I attended Sonar+D Last week to take part in a panel on ‘Tales of the Next Internet. I spoke alongside cybersecurity journalist Marta Peirano, researcher and activist Xenia Ermoshina, with the panel moderated by Ash Sarkar.

Me, Xenia, Marta, Ash

The panel went really well, and the topics covered were diverse but also coherent. I spoke on Long term thinking, and questioned wether we can even call the internet infrastructure (who ever heard of 100 year website or 1000 year internet), How software should make us feel, and finally on the upcoming proliferation of sensing devices and the urgency of climate change action. I finished my talk by reading “All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace” which might give you some idea by how off piste my talk was by the end.

Sonar+D is an amazing festival, bridging the delicate line between corporate sponsored event by leaving space open for more radical voices. I saw some amazing talks.

I saw Honor interview Noriko Taniguchi of team lab

Honor + Noriko Taniguchi

And Ash Interviewed Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst onstage for their voices of AI talk

Mat, Holly, Ash

Plus saw a bunch of fantastic art and other talks on building virtual worlds etc.

It was fun being a participant, being able to walk stright out of Sonar+D into the festival. I got to see a bunch of cool artists I Embedded a tumblr photo post below

I also drank a lot of absinthe and ate a lot of fantastic food. I also got to see and hang out with a bunch of other acquaintances and friends at the event. I was grateful for their company. Speaking to people you know when your social battery is low is so nice.

Total Babes, Corey, Huw + Colin (they finally met IRL for the first time)

A real highlight was staying with my good friend Huw Lemmey once my sonar hospitality ran out. On Saturday we hiked up Montserrat to Sant Jeroni peak. The view was incredible. And such a fun day, with lots of deep conversation and laughs here we are at the top.

“Two Hot And Sweaty Cool Dudes”
The view was worth it

A lot of folks I saw at sonar seem to be listening and gave me a lot inspiration and encouragement. It was also nice to see so many people give Huw’s Bad Gays podcast amazing feedback in real time and see how he reacted.

Honestly i spent no time on the internet but this is amazing

It is so inspiring being around friends and other amazing people who ‘execute’. A few conversations about imposter syndrome came about but friends re-assured me that i was there because I am executing too.. Which made me feel nice (but that my have been the beer). I have a lot of things on the go which I hope to get out into the world soon.

“perfect is the enemy of good enough” is a thing I think musicians and creatives with background in classical training always fight. It was really nice to hear that I’m not the only person fighting this every single day.

I also had some great conversations at sonar. Some of which included the notion of doing some future work.

Reading

I finished listening to Slaves of Darkenss which means I’m 2 books away from finishing the 54 book series. and i thought DUNE was a long slog during my Asia trip! Then i roll straight in to book 1 of 6 book ‘Solar War’ series. It takes 54 books to cover 9 years of plot. And 6 books to cover a battle that lasts 85 days. (the first and last war for mankind – it never ends – Warhammer 40k is set 10k years later and the Galaxey is still aflame )

It’s been amazing tho. Absolutely everything my 10 year old self wanted back in 1994 when I first discovered Warhammer.

Music

Annie is a member of Hollys ensamble, we had breakfast one morning at the hotel. I listened to her EP that day and it’s Fantastic.

089 :: July Vibes

I met “systems artist, spatial-media designer, and composer” and all round cool guy Cullen Miller this week. We had lunch then wen’t on mad walks around central.

Regent’s Park was looking particularly lovely – tho we had to be careful not to get absolutely baked by the sun. He’s awesome. Real kindred spirit.

Booked a trip to Crete later this year with some friends. Im going to see ALL the history whilst they all layabout by the pool. So looking forward to that quite a bit.

Been working on my opening statements of the panel on ‘the next internet’ I’m going to be on at SonarD next week. Its not finished yet but I’m i’m going for 1000 year internet vibes and ‘weird’.

I’m already freaking out about going to Barcelona for 5 nights, how busy it’s going to be. BUT I get to stay with Huw so that makes up for it.

Been working on the first PDF/Zine, i’ve been sprucing up the text to ‘Your attention is sovereign’ podcasts from last year.

Got a name and a domain for it. I just need to build the one page website for it when I get back from Spain.

081 :: Work/Life Update 2019

I have just updated the ‘Works’ page on my personal website with all the upcoming speaking events I have this year. I want to rebuild the site at some point but I hate wordpress more than I hate how the website looks right now so it keeps getting pushed to the bottom of the list.

I thought I would post an update outside of my regular weekly rhythm to include some of the confirmed highlights for me in the year ahead. I hope the 50ish of you that find me interesting enough to follow this blog find the information all in one place interesting.

Also.. I just posted something similar to LinkedIn so I just copy and pasted it here.

073 :: blah blah blah one take wonder.

Last week was super busy, not with work but personal stuff. We drove down to Dorset to attend a wedding and stay in an airbnb. Our little fiat 500 was packed to the gunnels: 3 suits, 1 dress, backpacks, food, booze, and 4 fully grown adults. It was quite a drive on the way down but we made it in on piece.

Deep Country

It was a lovely wedding and the miserable rain and wind from the day before cleared and they were blessed with glorious sunshine. It was the first wedding that our friendship group have attended with all the kids. there were a lot of em running around. It was cool.

On the way home we stopped off in the New Forest and saw the ponies

It’s funny. I massively fucked up this episode. I spoke way to fast. Ironically enough at the wedding I had a long conversation with a friend who works In local radio in Bristol about how i need to improve my ‘tracking’. Becuse the whole conceit is to write and record and edit in one hour i really don’t get that may takes (three at most for a sentence really) so i need to imporve my natural sounding speech when recording, I’m hoping this will come, as it will make and future forays in podcasting easier an more professional – blah blah blah one take wonder.
