106 :: The Last Post??

*If* providing everything goes well next week. This should be the last post on this blog from me. Apparently the RSS transfer *should* be seamless (I still need to contact wordpress.com customer support to make it happen). When I’ve put the new version of thejaymo.net live I will post here to say HAHA I’ve “permanently moved“.

Basically I’ve spent all week up to my elbows in WordPress. 14-15 years ago (oh god I can’t believe I can say that and it actually mean I was still an adult) I used to build web websites for money. Back in the days of WP 1.0ish. Before that I used to be an admin on a PHPBB so I’ve had some latent skills laying around to pick up again. I built the one page website thats currently on thejaymo.net back in Jan of 2018 and I’m still happy with it and I’m glad I semi reacquainted my self with WP back then.

I’ve had simple one page websites with my face on them for the best part of the last decade. BUT now I needed something more, I think its finally time to pull all the various disparate parts of my web identity (which I deliberately kept separate) into one place. Because I’m freelancing and doing all these talks and shit I need to have a one stop shop/semi web cv that lays it all out.

I’ll write more next week on my NEW blog :D about how weird its been pulling the last 10 years of my life together.

For now tho here’s the front page as the site loads:

*looks down* I’m literally wearing the same thing today as this photo I snapped in the spring

I totally get why websites are so fucking expensive. I’ve been hitting my head against a brick wall a lot this week trying to solve the simplest of problems. A mix of fighting the theme limitations vs the actual php settings. Most of my issues are revolved now except one. But I’ll continue to check and uncheck boxes and delete my cache and reload and see it its resolved over the weekend.

Also this week I went to see Holly at the Barbican. The world and his wife were also all in the foyer. Was was cool!

I wanted to go to the pokecentre shop launch yesterday at Westfield but I saw there was 6 hour queues on twitter and noped out.

 Inspiration and Setting Bigger Goals

Still thinking on the same thread as last week about being inspired by other people in my life, and wanting to do more ambitious things.

WEBSITE. ITS ALL I CAN THINK ABOUT. I HAVEN’T HIT ANY WRITING TARGETS THIS WEEK.

SHOULD I DO NANOWRIMO?

Reading

I basically have like 10(?) books left to read until I’ve read 1/2 of all the Warhammer 40k books available to buy and 100% of the books I actually want to read.

This years 65+ book binge has done weird things to my psyche fo sure. You would have thought I’d have got genre fatigue or something but there seems to be no signs of that – or slowing down.

This week I read Talon Of Horus. I’m reading it’s sequel right now.

Music

Planet Mu is re-releasing Greg Hates Car Culture by Venetian Snares as a 20th Anniversary edition. I can’t express the influence this album had on my life when I first heard it as a 15 year old in 2000. I bought GHCC the same week as I bought Sunn 0)))’s ØØ Void. These two albums changed my life for the better.

It’s wild to think that this Album kinda sounds fairly pedestrian to my ears 20 years on – compared to (if I may say so) the shit I used to DJ in a gassmask and robes back in the late noughtys. But at the time, this was and still is one of the most ‘raw’ records from venny snares hands down. I do think that the Winnipeg Is a Frozen Shithole album is more ‘brutal’
As I listened to this album on 20 year old MP3s this week, I could see the old OG pallid off green renoise tracker interface scrolling passed my eyes at warp speed.

I’ve also listened to this single a few times. I’m not sure why I like it so much. BUT I’m really in to the bassline sound and gonna try and replicate it this weekend in renoise.

090 :: Back From Sonar(+D) – Mega Post

Wow, What a week. Still decompressing from the trip. Writing this post has helped me process it quite a bit.

I attended Sonar+D Last week to take part in a panel on ‘Tales of the Next Internet. I spoke alongside cybersecurity journalist Marta Peirano, researcher and activist Xenia Ermoshina, with the panel moderated by Ash Sarkar.

Me, Xenia, Marta, Ash

The panel went really well, and the topics covered were diverse but also coherent. I spoke on Long term thinking, and questioned wether we can even call the internet infrastructure (who ever heard of 100 year website or 1000 year internet), How software should make us feel, and finally on the upcoming proliferation of sensing devices and the urgency of climate change action. I finished my talk by reading “All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace” which might give you some idea by how off piste my talk was by the end.

Sonar+D is an amazing festival, bridging the delicate line between corporate sponsored event by leaving space open for more radical voices. I saw some amazing talks.

I saw Honor interview Noriko Taniguchi of team lab

Honor + Noriko Taniguchi

And Ash Interviewed Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst onstage for their voices of AI talk

Mat, Holly, Ash

Plus saw a bunch of fantastic art and other talks on building virtual worlds etc.

It was fun being a participant, being able to walk stright out of Sonar+D into the festival. I got to see a bunch of cool artists I Embedded a tumblr photo post below

I also drank a lot of absinthe and ate a lot of fantastic food. I also got to see and hang out with a bunch of other acquaintances and friends at the event. I was grateful for their company. Speaking to people you know when your social battery is low is so nice.

Total Babes, Corey, Huw + Colin (they finally met IRL for the first time)

A real highlight was staying with my good friend Huw Lemmey once my sonar hospitality ran out. On Saturday we hiked up Montserrat to Sant Jeroni peak. The view was incredible. And such a fun day, with lots of deep conversation and laughs here we are at the top.

“Two Hot And Sweaty Cool Dudes”
The view was worth it

A lot of folks I saw at sonar seem to be listening and gave me a lot inspiration and encouragement. It was also nice to see so many people give Huw’s Bad Gays podcast amazing feedback in real time and see how he reacted.

It is so inspiring being around friends and other amazing people who ‘execute’. A few conversations about imposter syndrome came about but friends re-assured me that i was there because I am executing too.. Which made me feel nice (but that my have been the beer). I have a lot of things on the go which I hope to get out into the world soon.

“perfect is the enemy of good enough” is a thing I think musicians and creatives with background in classical training always fight. It was really nice to hear that I’m not the only person fighting this every single day.

I also had some great conversations at sonar. Some of which included the notion of doing some future work.

Reading

I finished listening to Slaves of Darkenss which means I’m 2 books away from finishing the 54 book series. and i thought DUNE was a long slog during my Asia trip! Then i roll straight in to book 1 of 6 book ‘Solar War’ series. It takes 54 books to cover 9 years of plot. And 6 books to cover a battle that lasts 85 days. (the first and last war for mankind – it never ends – Warhammer 40k is set 10k years later and the Galaxey is still aflame )

It’s been amazing tho. Absolutely everything my 10 year old self wanted back in 1994 when I first discovered Warhammer.

Music

Annie is a member of Hollys ensamble, we had breakfast one morning at the hotel. I listened to her EP that day and it’s Fantastic.

085 :: 5 Favourite Tracks of 2019 So Far

I am beginning to hate twitter threads with a passion. My pinboard bookmarks are full of them and its a little confusing despite diligent tagging. Why can’t folks just have a blog? I always think to myself, scrolling though an epic 50 post thread on a super interesting topic.

The question is rhetorical however as the answer is that the logics of Twitter demand that attention be kept inside the high walls of the network – but still. There are so many places on the internet to hangout.

I keep wondering if RSS readers are too much effort in 2019? or is that there are no decent free options? Rolling your own culture/internet is what it has always been here for …

Anyways I posted this list to Tumblr the other night. I had forgotten how rich Tumblr looks compared to Twitter. Despite being a heavy tumblr being an admin on solarpunks.net.

WordPress is obviously still the least worst option. But I like that I can just embed the whole post below. Perhaps I’m warming to Gutenberg … Perhaps.

076 :: Unfolding

More and more people seem to be drastically reducing or curtailing their social media usage.

My feeds are almost all useful links and information once again. Perhaps the fact that I don’t have retweets turned on that its so ‘clean’. By the same token I don’t expect anyone to RT my own stuff i post as I just assume no one is going to see it anyway.

I’ve seen a few people here and there bemoan the drop in social media use and the return to the private sphere ‘But I want to know whats going on in your life, we’re friends’. I really understand the sentiment which is why I’m so pleased about the uptick in personal blogging again. For example: A friend from home I haven’t seen in a long long time posted a blog update for the first time in about 5 years the other day. It turns out he now has a kid – but still retains his good taste in music.

On my part, I’ve now sustained the longest regular blogging even ever over here on this feed and it feels good even i’f its this semi news letter format – It works for me. If you ever wanted to know whats going on in my life then between this blog and my podcast they contain far more personal information than I would ever post to the socials. Even during the height of the millennial social media madness in the early days of Facebook in ’07ish.

I still don’t wish I was on whatsapp at all even tho its beginning to become a serious problem with regard to getting invited to things.

As folks also seem to drift away from facebook and instead create channels (groups?) for events in the green chat app i’m totally fucked (cut out). Eve as my long suffering social coordinator is starting to get to the end of her patience with it too – it is an open question about what I do. I’m hoping that Facebook ruins whatsapp with that integrated ID thing and everyone moves over to signal or telegram in the near future.

Permanently Moved – Unfolding

I struggle to articulate some of the ways that my mediation practice has made me go mad. “You don’t enter this world as a bright spark of consciousness – you emerge from it.”

Speaking of personal information…

This episode is basically Experience Part 2. An update from last year. In it, I try to articulate what all the fucking meditation and prayer I’ve been doing has done to my mind. Sometimes you think that you are not getting any where at all apart from grinding away on the mat. But then you look back and suddenly realise that you now have a completely different view of time (of all things).

Unfolding is perhaps my western brain trying to reach for a word to describe the surface between manifest and non-manifest.

I’m not trying to brag or come across as special or whatever at all – that is totally not my intention. Im just trying to articulate things that are happening to be. Besides if you want spoilers about whats next its all in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali written down about 1600 years ago.

068 :: Happy New Year!!

Its March but it feels like the new year.

We got back from our grand tour a little over a week and a half ago. Life is already back into full swing. It is nice to be approaching familiar tracks and paths with new eyes.

If you were close enough to me to be following along on instagram you know that Eve and I had a lovely time. Asia and Australia (especially Indonesia) are places that I never thought I’d go. So the whole trip had an added kind of surrealism wrapped around it.

I remember seeing a thing on Blue Peter once as a kid. About how the water goes down the plug hole in a different direction in the southern hemisphere – and it blew my mind. The first thing I did on arriving at the AirBnB in Indonesia was to turn the tap on and witness it for myself. A Miracle. A wonder of nature. It’s always the small things.

The Ministry

I’ve been encouraged by a few people I admire and value in private conversations since I got back to publish, publish everything, push all ALL the content.

It is apparently vital that I stop waiting for the threads of the future come to me and push out things to make the hustle of what i want to do with my life viable. With this in mind I’m going to do so.

I’ve been extremely worried – perhaps since the earliest stacktivism days – that publishing things that i think and believe on the internet is going to get me canceled. This is the main reason i haven’t ever just pushed out content at pace. The other reason is as an artsy person/under student the one thing that I feel university should have taught me (to ditch perfectionism) didn’t.

But its 2019 and I have so much to do and get done. The only option is to push stuff out and move on. Only Forward.

In other news I was on an episode of Occulture Podcast talking about SOLARPUNK with Gordon White from Runesoup recorded whilst staying with him in deepest darkest Tasmania in Feb.

Reading

I’ve read 16 Books so far this year. 5 Of them Dune Novels. I will also be writing a review of Thus Spoke The Plant v.soon. TLDR is its one of the best books i’ve read this side of the year 2000
