Wizard Prang was threatened by toast. He knew that he was supposed to eat breakfast. It was good for him. But eating was exactly what he did not want to do early in the morning.

Chronicles of Wizard Prang by Stafford Beer

Narrative

This post is three days late. It did briefly cross my mind about 8am on Saturday that I needed to post something but i was A. too tired (no one seems to sleep in berlin?) B. too busy and had to run out the door for a breakfast engagement, followed by brunch, then get to Trust for my p2pWeb talk, then after that was drinks, dinner, then more drinks.

So in short it was kinda busy.

I’m frantically preparing for my next round of being away from home due in Rotterdam on Thursday. Conversations I took away with me from Berlin have caused it to pivot some what a a major re-write is in process.

It is now Tuesday and it’s nearly 30 degrees so i don’t want to spend all day inside either.

036 :: Technical Support

“Lack of proper planning does not constitute an emergency” – Ancient Project Manager Saying

Narrative

Been a super fun week. Went drinking with Dr Kane Bidwell last night so I am feeling a little slow today. I need to get back up to full speed by later as we have friends coming over for more drinking. Its a nice life.

The weather is going to be gorgeous for the next week up to 23 degrees on Wednesday so i’m planning on going for a lot of walks by the thames and in Richmond park and will just spend the time thinking about my upcoming talks for May. I usually write/give the whole thing in my head over and over and then sit down and make the supporting slides. I’m hoping to have draft 1 of both talks complete by this time next week.

I bought some EZY Jeans from uniqlo and have been telling absolutly everyone how amazing they are. They have literally become my favourite item of clothing – maybe ever. I’m wearing them right now. A friend texted me saying “The EZY Jean comfort community welcomes you” lol.

Eve has started renting a counselling / therapy room in Kingston, I’m not sure if i’ve mentioned it by we have been running around the last 2 weeks getting everything ready for that. its looks great, she had her first client in it Sunday, and two other councillors are interested in renting the room already so that is 100% great! So proud of her.

Episode 4 has come around quickly. In this episode I address some feedback, moan about the neighbours, make a few announcements, and begin a new (hopefully) recurring segment called tech support.

It’s also now available in all your favourite pod catchers! (iTunes is still in review tho)

My talk title for Rotterdam:

Solarpunk: A grand dress rehearsal in remaking our present and future history.

Right now, across disparate fields, a future is being built. But the future does not passively ‘arrive’ fully formed from the aether, we must first meet it the way humanity has always done: though dreams, stories and song. This talk will explore narrative strategies and strategic narratives such as RetroSuburbia and Land as Platform to make life more wonderful for us right now, and more importantly for the generations that follow.

If you have a Runesoup subscription and are so inclined you can hear me talk with Gordon about solarpunk for over an hour in the bonus member material.

I’ve been writing a lot of fiction recently (500 words a day) and I’ve resurrected my hard sci-fi solarpunk novella which is a sci-fi novel where the world building is all technologies that exist today. Super solarpunk tbh.

Elvia Wilk wrote a long post over on e-flux about solarpunk: Is Ornamenting Solar Panels a Crime?

Reading

I’m still reading Improbable Botany And   The Invention of Nature by Andrea Wulf.

I also would like to point your attention to this long read on solar orientated cities

031 :: He escapes into absurdity

The battle for freedom is not fought alone on the great fronts. It is fought in every home, in every community, in every state in the world. it is fought in the mind and heart of every man.

Jack Whiteside Parsons – Freedom is a Two-edged Sword

Narrative

Returned from Berlin invigorated and renewed with a sense of purpose. I must admit that its a nice change. Before I left I’d somehow gotten myself stuck in my living room, becoming increasingly anxious about leaving the house – some kind of prison of inaction. I’ve decided to make some changes and build out more of a routine to ensure it doesn’t happen again… you know… like committing to leaving the house for at least an hour a day lol. I have too much to do this year to let being a Sad Boi get in the way.

SO much has happened to me since I left my job in September, on top of that I wouldn’t say it was hyperbole to say that I’m just coming out of a PTSD like situation from my old job. I’d really like to go for dinner with my old boss (who quit before me) to close out that period of my life. Not that I want sympathy or I’m telling a sob story or anything but the last 6/7 months really have been a real struggle for me.

Work meetings aside, the main thing that I got from the Berlin trip was seeing friends and talking frankly over dinner with people I really admire about their strategies for managing their daily lives. Keeping up with the self motivation, goal setting etc. I’m grateful for that discussion. I’ve taken a lot home with me.

Since I last blogged (a few days ago) I’ve basically been getting my ducks in a row ready for a busy next week. I’m also in the middle of trying to tidy my desk/working space and creating a better environment for myself. Not that it wasn’t organised (HAHAHA- Eve) it was just er…. visually messy…. who am i kidding. It’s sometimes so messy Eve puts up a screen in front of it when people come over.

I heard back from Re:Publica Berlin about my talk proposal on Solarpunk. They said in the email that I’d hear something in the next 2 weeks or so. Time is moving along and out though, so they need to get on that I have other shit in my life to organise.

Frank Landis wrote a fantastic pice on solarpunk over on Antipope.org which was super cool.

Reading

I’m 2/3 of the way though Metro 2035 (Метро #3) by Dmitry Glukhovsky

I think the first book was probably the best one in the trilogy as it was new and an exciting premise in the genre, plus my head was full of it on my first trip to Moscow just as Roadside Picnic and the game Stalker was in my head when I visited Chernobyl. I have a massive soft spot for post apocalyptic fiction since I was a teenager. I just can’t help myself.

It’s interesting listening to my inner thoughts/reaction to the world of the novel having been so deep in the solarpunk community recently. The first great solarpunk novel is still to be written but the focus on the hope amongst climate and environmental tragedy is much more my jam. Post apocalyptic solarpunk written by teenagers paints a more interesting and complex world than nuclear grimdark.

I have David Holmgren’s newest book Retrosuburbia on order I’m super excited about it.

Music

Since I got back I’ve had the Superorganisim, S/T album on repeat. It’s a real strong debut album.  Something for your M.I.N.D is one of my favourite singles from last year and the album builds and iterates on it.

I’m really glad that I got to see them at their first ever show last year at Village Underground. I’ve just looked and they are hitting the festival circuit hard in 2018.

Rollingstone have a cool article on them called: Superorganism: How an Internet-Addled Commune Made a Warped Psych-Pop Gem – I’d agree. If you like quirky psych pop, this might already be shaping up to be the album of the summer for you.

In other music news, I picked up Toto Coelo – I Eat Cannibals 12″ single for 50p MINT in Oxfam yesterday and it’s made me so so happy.

030 :: “New Nerds”

Honest disagreement is often a good sign of progress – Gandhi

Narrative

I am/I’ve been in Berlin for a while. Right now I am typing this from Trust one of the many Blockchain Co-Working spaces that are in Berlin.

2018-03-13 15.00.08

Photo from Saturday Night. Thanks Cory!

So… I blew passed my self imposed Saturday blog posting deadline. I don’t really have an excuse to be honest. I’ve either been really busy all day or sleeping for nearly a week.

I must admit, Berlin is not my favourite city. It has a grey spirit. It’s not hostile but I have never found it particularly receptive to approaches. The Spree was completely frozen when I arrived (Tits where indeed frozen). It’s been days of grey Clouds. Wind, Rain (as I type this), But Sunday it was 17 degrees with blue sky sunshine. We ate dinner outside in the evening. Since then it has been Raining. Really strange weather.

I’m staying at a ‘Scandi’ Hotel. It’s trying to be international chic in an Airspace kinda way. If you have ever been in someones flat that is 100% Ikea furniture you can get the picture of what the hotel is like. Nice and practical on the surface but when you look more closely everything is slightly broken, chipped or delaminating.

Continuing with my airspace existence, I met up with Johannes in an airspace coffeeshop called westberlin on Saturday. We could have been anywhere but thats the point I suppose. I have data here: The whole city opens up as a strange techno airspace-dream. Get out of the airport, call a Mytaxi via app, pay for the U bahn with its app. Pay for shit in the hotel with my contactless online bank that isn’t charging me a fee for spending Euro. All good.

I went to see the The Ishtar Gate in the Pergamon Museum yesterday. It was colossal

The Ministry

I’m in Berlin both for work and for a (previously mentioned) conspiratorial reason. The weekend was spent at a facilitated meeting with a bunch of awesome people. We filled a huge whiteboard with notes and planning.

Solarpunk was written about in the LARB this week by Rhys who I had a call with a few weeks ago. We met at a sci-fi convention back in September, He including a link to the reference guide which was nice of him. It’s weird that different websites that I thought would have had a much lower profile than the LARB have driven more traffic.

I met up with Terra0 whilst I was here. they are building a forrest that owns itself.

Had some beers withJulian Oliver who I have known for a while now, since the early days of the #stacktivism project. That was nice.

My good friend Alex also happens to be in Berlin and we grabbed dinner.

I’m kinda blockchained out. TBH

Reading

Even though I have like 101 books on the go at the moment, I started and finished reading Skin In the Game by Taleb this week. Its such an important concept. One of my favourite quotes is:

“Bureaucracy is a construction by which a person is conveniently separated from the consequences of his or her actions.”

–  Skin In the Game Nassim Nicholas Taleb

Music

I’ve barely had the chance to listen to anything in the last week or so. The only music I have on my phone is a collection of Lightnin’ Hopkins MP3s so I’ve been listing to that tbh.
